Healthy you 3/31/11

I'm doing great right now at dropping the pounds. I'm at a new goal I haven't seen since my last son was born. In September he will be 5! Its always so motivating to reach a new goal. In this book I'm reading, very slowly I might add, Made to Crave. She suggests to have a friend that you can journey with on the Healthy You path. This is a great suggestion. You can hold each other accountable for doing great. She can pray for you and you for her. Hopefully the temporary pleasure of one brownie won't be worth having to tell your accountability partner that you made the choice to mess up.

Home school "wednesday"...

Well obviously the week totally got away from me becuase I meant to post this yesterday!

We have been posting sentiments about home schooling our kids and this week is our Home School Science Fair - I have been running the Science Fair for three years now and it is continually growing.  This year we have 32 projects entered!  Pre-k all the way up to High School.
I want to put out an invitiation for any one who home teaches who might be interested in entering a project next year (open to all homeschoolers) or to any one who is interested in home teaching and would like to see how some families teach science.
The Science Fair is this Friday, April 1st at 6:00-8:00pm at First Baptist Church in Silvis (1101 10th ave)
We will be serving dessert as you view the projects - hope to see you there!

These are my boys with thier rocket project

Follow me Tuesday 3/29/11

This Follow me Tuesday I wanted to highlight how you can be frugal by making your own laundry soap. It really isn't hard at all and only takes a few minutes! I posted a few weeks ago that I wanted to do this, here. I got my recipe from here. A friend called me and thought I would want to know about his cousin that makes her own laundry soap, so I checked it out.
It only requires you to by 3 ingredients! Borax, Washing soda, and Naptha soap. This soap smells so clean and refreshing! These are all found in the same isle, laundry soap isle. I posted the prices I paid for them here. It only ends up being about $.35 for a 33 load container of laundry soap. And I didn't use a single coupon!! Check out the video.

Needed Ingredients
1/3 bar Fels Naptha
1/2 cup Arm & Hammer washing soda
1/2 cup 20 Mule Team borax
Water

Needed Utensils
You will also need a small cheese grater ,a 4 qt sauce pan, water, and a 3 gallon bucket for mixing (got mine at Wal-Mart for $1.98).

Grate the soap in the sauce pan with a grater.

Add six cups of water to the pan, heating until the grated soap melts. I had some pieces of soap I didn't grate to well and they floated to the top. I just picked those out.

Add the washing soda and borax, stirring until dissolved. Remove from heat.

Pour 4 cups of hot water into your empty bucket. Add soap mixture to the bucket. Stir. Now add 1 gallon plus 6 cups (or 22 cups) of water; stir.

Pour into gallon containers. (Some people use empty water jugs; I use old laundry soap containers since they have the measuring cup built in the lid.) Recipe makes about 2 gallons, which is enough for 64 loads of laundry when you use 1/2 cup of detergent for each load. The pouring process is a little messy. I'm sure once you do it often it may get easier but I spilled about half of what I poured. Maybe get a funnel to make it easier!! Also the batch I made didn't fit into 2 33 load containers of laundry soap. If you are using these containers you may need 3. If thats the case the cost I figured out is less.

Healthy you 3/24/11

I feel like I'm on self sabotage mode this week. I am eating all kinds of really unhealthy foods. I have lost about 6 pounds in the last couple weeks. I haven't worked out at all in a week. It's been so busy for some reason. I havn't gained any back yet but I need to stop before I do.
These few lines stick out to me in 'Made to Crave'.

I relied on food more than I relied on God. I craved food more than I craved God. Food was my comfort. Food was my reward. Food was my joy. Food was what I turned to in times of stress, sadness, and even in times of happiness.

Why do we do this. We have an accomplishment and we celebrate by having a feast or going out to eat. We are sad about something and we pull out the chocolate. It's never ending!!

They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved. Psalms 78:18
(She says in the book) Each time I craved something I knew wasn't part of my plan, I used that craving as a prompt to pray. Instead of wallowing in what I can't have , I'm making the choice to celebrate what I can have.

How is everyone elses week going?! Tearing down those bricks one by one (:

Target shopping

I haven't been Target coupon shopping since the freezer deal! I had some time tonight and needed some 'me' time so I just wondered thru the isles looking at all the items and my coupons. I spent 2 1/2 hours and only bought 21 items. I didn't get any really awesome deals but sometimes this is nice to do when you have time just to see whats out there and what may be going on sale in the future.

It took me a while to find the LPLP Linea Pelle accessories. Theres a new Target coupon for this item. The cheapest thing I saw was $9.99 but this doesn't expire for a few weeks so hold onto it and I'm sure these will clearance out! They are on the end rack of the purses. The isle closest to the shoes, if you're looking for the LPLP Linea Pelle accessories.

If you like the Wheat Thins ,they are $2 and theres a buy3get1 free coupon on Targets site. Also use coupons here, here, here, and here. To make them really cheap!

I also left a few coupons around the store that I wasn't going to use! (:

Follow me Tuesday 3/22/11

We had some issues downloading to YouTube today so its on the Facebook page here! In this video we talked about stock piles. We have had a lot of questions about how to organize your stock pile. In this video you see Stephanie's organized pile. I also have some pictures posted of how I do mine. There are many different ways to organize. You need to do what works best for the space you have.
This is a metal shelf I have at the bottom of my basement stairs. I keep most of my stock pile here.

I am lucky enough to have a pantry in my kitchen. We added these shelves to the pantry wall and you could do that anywhere in your house. On these shelves you could keep body wash, deodorant, toothpaste, cleaning supplies, etc.

These are shelves that we put on our back porch that we had a whole shelf of kitty litter on. Also cat food and toilet paper stores well here. This is also where I keep my freezer.

I have a pretty big toy stock pile too. This is kept in my bedroom closet. If you have a toy stock pile make sure its put somewhere the kids aren't allowed.

We had a food video recorded also but I'm not sure we are going to be able to put that up now. I will just share some info on this post. I'm very lucky to have tons of cabinet space to put my food stock pile.

For those of you not so lucky to have this space. Some people store things in plastic totes in the basement or garage. Also if you have some desk space you can always stick things underneath the desk. I would recommend getting some shelves put in somewhere like in the pictures above if you can.
I also notice things tend to be placed through out the house sometimes. Note the 3 men deodorants in the above picture. This is in my kitchen and yes, they are all opened....

Feel free to share your pictures with us too on Facebook! Its fun to see how everyone else does it and there are so many different ways to organize.

Spring time! Garden ideas

This year we have our house on the market and can't do a garden like we do every year. I was really disappointed because we love having a garden. I just received a Lowes book in the mail today that gave me an idea!

We usually have a traditional small garden. We just plant the basics and have a little fence around it to keep out the animals.(this is not a picture of our garden. I just pulled it off the web.)

But who says we have to do a traditional garden, right! There are so many different ways to grow a garden. Some of you may be in an apartment or don't have much of a yard. You can still grow a garden and save your family money and eat organic veggies!!

This garden you can do if you do have a yard but not great dirt. Raised boxes, fill in your own dirt or compost. There are lots of websites to go to that would assist you in this process but here's one for you if you don't know where to start.

Now if you don't have the room for a garden or you're selling your house and not sure if the new owners will like the idea of digging up the yard here's the garden for you!

Now you can make these in pretty pots or just what ever you have. If you need ideas on how to do this you can go here.
So what is everyone doing this year for a Garden? Any good tips or ideas?!

Shopping for Childrens Clothes

Did you know that our local Salvation Army on Brady street in Davenport, Iowa gets Target items that don't sell when they clearance out? I have known this for a while but since couponing haven't been to Salvation army alot. I just want to point out a few things. While there I saw this toy. Salvation Army is selling this for $6. If you look (right next to my sons grey shirt, sorry about that) they left Targets clearance tag on there. You could have gotten this at Target for $3.21. Not sure why you would want to buy it for $6 when you can see they were selling it for much cheaper....

If you look at their clothing items, however, you may have better luck. I did see this
$3 for a pair of brand new girls shorts. That's a little better. They also have used items that are very inexpensive too. I just wanted to point that out. They also have adult clothing that Target sends over.

If you're looking for some nicer kids clothes we also have lots of really nice consignment shops in our area. I really like Once Upon A Child on 53rd street. Its across from Chick-Fil-A. We just found some little boys shoes for $1 and some very nice boys jeans for $5.50.

Healthy you 3/17/11

So I just picked up a new book from the library. A few of my friends started reading it and are really enjoying it. It sounded great from what they were telling me so of coarse I want to read it. I turned to the first page and WOW, off the bat it already hits the spot. The introduction is called 'Finding Your "Want To". How perfect is that? Most of us know that if we eat foods that are healthy for you, you're going to be healthy. Most of us know what foods are healthy. Its not a matter of, you must eat them or you could have major health issues or even you should eat them because they're better for you. When it comes down to it, it's all about motivation. Here's what it says in some of my favorite parts just in the introduction!'
:
It's not the 'how to' I'm missing. It's the 'want to'..really wanting to make changes and deciding that the results of those changes are worth the sacrifice.
The cycle continues day after day, week after week, year after year. A whole lifetime could be spent making excuses, giving in, feeling guilty, resolving to do better, mentally beating myself up for not sticking to my resolve, feeling like a failure, and then resigning myself to the fact that things can't change.
And I don't want to spend a lifetime in this cycle.
She goes on to talk about the story in Matthew 19 about the rich young ruler. She says basically its like us asking how we can get closer to God? And in Matthew 19:21 it says 'If you want to be perfect (whole), go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me'. She says Jesus isn't only saying 'give up your treasures and follow me' . He's saying 'I want you to give up the one thing you crave more than me.(unhealthy food) Then come, follow me." Wow! I paraphrased this last part.

So how is that for the first 5 pages of a book! This book, if you want to look more into it, is 'Made to Crave' by Lysa Terkeurst. I'm really looking forward to reading more.

I have a really good recipe for some low calorie, high fiber, crave satisfying cupcakes. You take a box cake mix(any flavor you want), something sugar free if you can. Add 1 can of Pumpkin. Add 1/2 cup water. Mix well. Put into cupcake tin. Bake on 350 for about 20 minutes. Can add a little whip cream to the top and these are about 50 calories if you use the small cupcake tin and 100 calories if you use the normal size.

Follow me Tuesday - Making price points 3/15/11

Make sure you make a 12 week cycle so you know what the rock bottom price is. Just use a normal notebook and keep track of 20-50 items for 12 weeks so you know what time is going to be the best price for these items you use the most of. Once you figure out the rock bottom price, that's when you want to stock up on those items. Sometimes you may not figure it right and have to pay more when you run out but don't beat yourself up over it if that happens.

Remember if you have overage when using a coupon, the store will not give you money back!

You can almost always count on personal care items being free or close to free. This would be toothpaste, body wash, tampons, etc.

March-Freezer deals
May/June Swimsuit deals
August Back to school deals-School/office supplies, underwear, socks, undergarments
Oct-Dec Toy sales
November Electronics/video games
After all Holidays you can stock up on candy. Usually right after the Holiday it goes down to 50% but if you wait a week-3 weeks you can get it for 90%.

Clothing is usually towards the end of the season and you can always pair coupons with clearance items. Jcpenny almost always has $10 off $50 purchase. Old navy has where you can dig for bones. Younkers always has 20% off and sometimes has $10 of $25 purchase that you can now use on yellow dot items.

We usually post any major sales on the blog so if you're unsure just make sure you check the blog. But get to know your price points for your staple foods that you use the most of.

Our next few videos we are going to talk about how to organize your stock pile. Keep in mind we are not extreme couponers.

spring is in the air!

With the feel of spring and having the house up for sale I decided to go through our cabinets today and purge. I'm getting rid of all our plastic, except our water bottles for now.
Here's a before pic of one cabinet
Plastic lids everywhere, all of those plastic kids cups, papers just thrown in...the cabinet is the hide all place when you're having an open house..haha!

The kids loved helping with this chore. Malaki loved looking on the bottom of all the plastic to separate the recyclable things. Some of the nicer plastic, like the kids cups, we will be putting in our next yard sale.

Toby loves to sing. He's always begging to get his picture taken too..haha.

We have walls and walls of cabinets. This is just one wall of the finished product. It always feels so good to reorganize. I am not an organized person by nature but it still feels nice to be organized for a little bit.
So what is everyone else doing to get ready for spring. Any purging!?

Homemade Laundry soap

So yesterday I posted a link to a new friend of mine Luv2BFrugal about making your own Laundry soap. I went to the Hy-vee tonight and bought the things I need to do it. These items are all together in the laundry isle, close to the powder laundry soap. At Hy-vee in Davenport the prices are: Borax $3.38, Washing Soda $2.69, and the Naptha Bar Soap $.99. Which when figured out is about $.70 for 64 loads worth of laundry! I won't get to test it out til at least Monday though. I'll let all of you know. I may even try it for carpet cleaner.

You can go here for more info on why you should try to make your home environment a little healthier. Heres some info on how different cleaners affect you.

This website has some great insight on making your own cleaners. These would be much cheaper than your normal, full of toxin, cleaners! And it doesnt take a lot in ingredients. Let us know if you have a favorite.
Thanks to Steph for the motivation (:

Healthy you 3/10/11

So I have been thinking alot this week about 'Weight loss Thursday' and I decided I would rather call it 'Healthy you'. I don't want it to be about weight loss but about being healthy. Losing weight isn't really about losing weight or it shouldn't be. If you make it purely about losing weight than in the long run you aren't going to succeed. Eventually you are going to put the weight back on and still be unhealthy. It's all about the choices we are making for our lives. The food we put into our bodies. And I know some of you reading are not trying to lose weight, just trying to make healthy choices.
Colossians 2:8 Don't let anyone lead you astray with empty philosophy and high-sounding non-sense that come from human thinking and from the evil powers of this world. and not from Christ.
With that being said I want to highlight something I read a while ago in a book. If we understand how our bodies work and the way God designed them to react maybe it can be easier to make different food choices. In 'Suzanne Somers Fast &and Easy' she has great insight on our bodies and the way we process different foods. She has a list of  'Funky Foods' that she says you should just take out of your diet (or if you don't like that word you can say eating). These foods raise our insulin level in our bodies. Insulin determines what foods will be stored as fat in our bodies or burned off as energy.
Here's a list of some 'Funky Foods' :
 Sugar

  Beets           Maple Syrup
  Carrots        Molasses
  Corn syrup  Sugar
  Honey

Starches
  Bananas                      Potatoes
  Corn                           Sweet Potatoes
  Pasta (made from         White Flour
semolina or white flour)    White Rice
  Popcorn                        Winter squashes(Acorn, butternut)

This is a small list of what she says are 'funky foods'. If you take these out of your diet completely you will loss weight very fast. Now the point is to be healthy though. So I would say if you just focus on replacing White with Wheat for now and try to cut out eating a large amount of these items you'll be on the track to a healthy you.

Homeschool Wednesday

Homeschool Messes (copied from the AOP website.)

"Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin" (Proverbs 20:9)?

Do you ever feel like you pick up messes all day? As a homeschooling parent, I quickly learned not to wait until the end of the day to clean the house. Walking through each room throughout the day, I continually organized and put a few things away as my children were studying. If I didn't, I knew I wouldn't have enough energy left to tackle the mountains of laundry, dishes, and clutter before bed.
Keeping our lives clean from the messes of sin also takes a continual effort. In the Old Testament, only the clean were allowed in the temple to worship before the Lord. Today, we must come before the Lord daily and allow Him to cleanse us of all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). Keeping short accounts with God keeps the messes of sin from building into mountains and destroying our relationship with Him.
Is your spiritual life full of clutter and messes? Are there issues that God has prompted you to clean, such as seeking forgiveness from a family member or disciplining yourself to live a healthier lifestyle?(hmmm...kind of goes with our weight loss Thursday!) Don't wait until tomorrow, next week, or next year to start obeying the Lord. Start today and rediscover the joy, power, and strength that come from living a clean life before the Lord. "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin" (1 John 1:7).
I got this weeks 'Homeschool Wed from  AOP. Go here if you arent familiar with this company or want more info! We use AOP for Language arts, History, and Bible.
